Toshiba Laptop Battery Recall

Toshiba has identified a problem with some of the batteries used in Toshiba laptop computers manufactured between March and May of 2006. The affected batteries simply stop working – in other words, they stop accepting a charge and no longer supply power to the computer. There is no danger of overheating and the problem does not pose any safety related issue or concern.

The affected batteries were sold with several Toshiba portable computer models, and were also sold as accessories. The problem has been fixed by the Sony, the battery vendor, and batteries manufactured since June 1, 2006 are not affected by this problem.

Toshiba is offering to replace affected batteries with new batteries, free of charge, regardless of whether or not they have actually failed, with the intention that as few customers as possible will ever experience the problem.

Affected Batteries in Toshiba Portable Computers

The affected batteries were included in certain of the following Toshiba laptop computer models. Only some - not all - of the batteries used in these models are affected.

  • Satellite A100/A105 - Tecra A6

  • Satellite M50/M55 - Tecra A7

  • Satellite M100/M105

Batteries included with other models of Toshiba portables computers are not affected by this problem, and are not eligible for exchange under this program.

Affected Batteries Sold Separately as Accessories

Additionally, some - not all - of the Toshiba accessory batteries with the following three battery model numbers are affected by the problem:

  • PA3399U-2BRS

  • PA3400U-1BRS

  • PA3465U-1BRS

What to Do if Your Toshiba Laptop Model or Toshiba Accessory Battery is Listed Above?

Option 1: Contact the EveryNetwork 24-hour Help Desk at 877-647-2262 or discuss with your On Site Engineering team for personal assistance to determine if your system is one of the affected units.

Option 2: If your Toshiba laptop matches the models above; was manufactured between March 2006 and May 2006; or if you purchased a replacement battery that was manufactured during that time period, you should immediately follow the steps below to identify if your battery is affected:

The easiest and most accurate way to determine if your battery is affected is with Toshiba's BatteryCheck utility software. The BatteryCheck utility software identifies whether or not the battery in a Toshiba portable computer is affected by the problem described above. If it finds an affected battery, it will launch your web browser and automatically fill in a form on the Toshiba Support website with notebook and battery identification information. You will be asked to add your shipping information and submit the no-charge replacement order.

The BatteryCheck utility software is very small and, therefore, downloads quickly. Simply download the BatteryCheck utility software at http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=1482429&BV then run it and follow the simple on-screen instructions.

As always, please contact the EveryNetwork 24-hour Help Desk or contact a member of your On-site Engineering Team for personal assistance.
