Lenovo and IBM Laptop Battery Recall

Lenovo has recalled 208,000 9-cell lithium-ion batteries manufactured for use in ThinkPad Notebook Computers that shipped between November 2005 and February 2007 due to a fire hazard.

Lenovo (US) and IBM, in cooperation with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, has issued a voluntary recall for the faulty laptops batteries. If the battery in the laptop is struck forcefully on the corner, such as from a direct fall to the ground, the battery pack can overheat and pose a fire hazard to users. This recall is not due to an internal battery cell defect.

Lenovo Laptop Models Affected

The batteries were designed by Lenovo, but manufactured by Sony, and used in laptops sold from November 2005 thru February 2007. Potentially affected batteries were sold with the following models of Lenovo laptops or may have been sold separately as secondary/replacement batteries:

  • T Series (T60 and T60p)
  • R Series (R60 and R60e)
  • Z Series (Z60m, Z61e, Z61m and Z61p)

These models may have shipped with either 6-cell or 9-cell batteries, however, only the 9-cell batteries are being recalled.

The recalled 9-cell batteries have the following part number, which can be found on the battery label: FRU P/N 92P1131.

The Battery Part/Model is printed on the top of the battery, just above the yellow warning label, either on the right or left side.

2. If your battery part/model is FRU P/N 92P1131, please contact the EveryNetwork 24-hour Help Desk at 877-647-2262 or your on-site Engineering team for personal assistance in determining if your specific battery is affected. As always, EveryNetwork will assist you in ordering a replacement battery from Lenovo.

While we realize it is an inconvenience and may be a bit unrealistic for you to stop using the battery due to the demands of your business, this is a very serious matter and should be addressed immediately. EveryNetwork advises you follow the steps as directed by Lenovo and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, but if you choose to use the battery while awaiting a replacement, we recommend that you monitor the temperature of your battery and discontinue use if you feel it is reaching an unsafe level.

You can always continue to use the notebook computers safely by removing the battery and use the AC adapter with power cord to power the system until the replacement battery arrives.

Once again, should you have any questions please feel free to reach us directly at 877-647-2262.

As always, EveryNetwork takes the safety of our customers’ systems and networks very seriously.
