Dell Laptop Battery Recall

Dell, in cooperation with the United Stated Consumer Product Safety Commission, has issued a recall for more than 4 million laptops batteries. Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire, resulting in property damage to furniture and personal affects. No injuries have been reported.

Dell Laptop Models Affected

The batteries were manufactured by Sony and used in laptops sold between April 1, 2004 and July 18, 2006. Potentially affected batteries were sold with the following models of Dell laptops or may have been sold separately as secondary batteries. In addition, these batteries may have also been provided in response to service calls.

  • Latitude: D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810

  • Inspiron: 500M, 510M, 600M, 700M, 710M, 6000, 6400, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 9400, E1505, E1705

  • Precision: M20, M60, M70, M90

  • XPS: XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170, XPS M1710

While Sony manufactures batteries for Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and Toshiba, Sony believes that the overheating problem is believed to be specific to the batteries supplied to Dell. As a result, no other company currently has plans for a recall.

What to Do if Your Laptop Model is Listed Above?

Contact the EveryNetwork 24-hour Help Desk at 877-647-2262 or discuss with your On Site Engineering team for personal assistance to determine if your system is one of the affected units.

While we realize it is an inconvenience and may be a bit unrealistic for you to stop using the battery due to the demands of your business, this is a very serious matter and should be addressed immediately. EveryNetwork advises you follow the steps as directed by Dell and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but if you choose to use the battery while awaiting a replacement, we recommend that you monitor the temperature of your battery and discontinue use if you feel it is reaching an unsafe level.

You can always continue to use the affected notebook computers safely by removing the battery and use the AC adapter with power cord to power the system until the replacement battery arrives.

As always, EveryNetwork takes the safety of our customers’ systems and networks very seriously.
